Winner of the 2000 Alberta
Playwrighting Competition, Mary’s Wedding is a beautiful and
sweeping tale set during World War I. From the shelter of a damp barn in a
thunderstorm, to the mud-filled trenches of France, Mary’s Wedding
takes us on a theatrical roller-coaster ride. Boy meets girl. Love ensues. The
“Great War” beckons. Only letters, memories, and dreams keep their love alive.
Mary's Wedding
is the story of a young couple, Charlie and Mary, who meet and fall in love on
the brink of WWI. The power of their commitment to each other enables them to
overcome time, distance and conflict, remaining forever in one another's heart.
It will hauntingly touch anyone who has ever experienced the pangs of first
love. Stephen
Massicotte's award-winning play is an imaginative and sensitive presentation of
a young man and woman falling in love and being torn apart by the exigencies of
the time in which they live. In addition to the
captivating tale of Charlie and Mary's romance, the drama highlights experiences
from Canadian military history and honours the sacrifices made by Canadians
during WWI. The play has been described as "part love story, part history
lesson, and part moving memorial to the human cost of war." |
