"If We Are Women"
by Joanna McClelland Glass is a
veritable fugue for four voices on the bonds between mothers and
daughters. Three generations of women gather on the deck of
a beach house in Connecticut. One grandmother, Ruth, has flown, for the
first time, from the Canadian prairie. She is an illiterate woman whose
parents were homesteading pioneers. Her daughter Jessica is a successful
novelist whose lover has died recently. The other grandmother, Rachel, is
an unorthodox Jewish intellectual with a Master's degree. Strangely, all
three share the same lament - they wanted a better education.
